Amsterdam Is About To Get More Expensive

If Amsterdam is on the travel list — book sooner rather than later. The city just announced plans to raise its already record-high tourist tax and the increases are coming fast.

Amsterdam currently charges a 12.5% tax on every hotel night booked in the city — already the highest accommodation levy in all of Europe. A new proposal from the city's coalition government wants to push that to 16% by 2027 and add an additional percentage point every year after that until it hits a cap of 20% by 2030.

To put that in real numbers — a $200 hotel night in Amsterdam currently adds $25 in tourist tax. By 2030 that same night adds $40. Over a week-long stay the difference adds up fast.

The city's reasoning is straightforward. Amsterdam has a permanent population of just under one million people but recorded nearly 24 million overnight visitors in 2025. That kind of pressure on public spaces, infrastructure and quality of life comes at a cost — and the city has decided visitors should pay more of it.

The tourist tax increase is just one part of a broader effort to manage overcrowding. Amsterdam has also proposed banning all sea cruise ship arrivals by 2025 and is cutting the number of river cruises entering the city by 10%. The cruise ban proposal alone drew immediate pushback from Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages — both of whom called the restrictions disappointing and said they are watching developments closely.

Amsterdam is not alone in this trend. New Zealand, Thailand and several regions in Japan have all recently introduced new entry fees for non-residents. European cities in particular are moving quickly toward higher accommodation levies as a way to fund the infrastructure that mass tourism demands.

The message from cities around the world is increasingly clear — tourism is welcome but it is no longer free. The travelers who move fast and book early will always get the better deal.
