Happy Sunday. It's Aug 23, 2026. It’s also National Cheap Flight Day, so today we’re diving into one of the most powerful tools for finding better-value flights: Avios.

Avios may look like one loyalty currency, but it’s really a network of programs. The key isn’t just earning Avios—it’s knowing where to put them, when to transfer them, and what to book.

And because it’s National Cheap Flight Day, we’re making The Ultimate Guide to Airport Lounges 50% off today only. If you’ve ever wondered which lounges are actually worth your time, how to get in, and how to make the most of them, this guide has you covered.

Avios Isn’t Just One Program

The points currency with seven different homes

Avios is used by seven airline loyalty programs, including British Airways Club, Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, Loganair Loyalty, Qatar Airways Privilege Club Finnair Plus, and Vueling Club.

The important part: your Avios can generally move between these programs at 1:1, allowing you to move your balance to the program offering the better redemption.

That means earning through British Airways doesn't mean you're locked into booking through British Airways.

The lesson: Don't ask “How many Avios does this flight cost?”

Ask:

“Which Avios program gives me the best price for this flight?”

British Airways confirms that Avios can be transferred among the participating programs, while current rules require accounts to meet certain age requirements before transfers.

The 30-Day Rule Could Save Your Trip

Set up your Avios accounts before you need them

There's a new wrinkle many travelers won't know about.

Avios accounts now need to be at least 30 days old before certain transfers can be made. That means opening an Iberia, Finnair, British Airways or other Avios account after you've found your award may leave you unable to move points when you need them.

Boarding Soon tip: Even if you don't have Avios today, consider creating the major accounts now and linking them properly.

You don't need a balance to prepare.

Do it before you find the deal.

There’s a 30% Avios Transfer Bonus Right Now

Amex points are suddenly much more powerful

This is the timely centerpiece.

Through September 27, 2026, U.S. American Express Membership Rewards members can receive a 30% bonus when transferring points to:

  • British Airways Club

  • Iberia Club

  • Aer Lingus AerClub

So 50,000 Amex points → 65,000 Avios.

The promotion is particularly interesting because those Avios can then be moved within the Avios ecosystem, giving you access to different redemption opportunities.

But there's one golden rule:

Don't transfer just because there's a bonus.

Find the award first. Then transfer the exact amount you need.

Transfers are generally irreversible, and award availability can disappear.

The Best Avios Redemptions Aren't Always Through British Airways

This is where the real game begins

Some of the most interesting Avios sweet spots come from putting your points in the right program.

Examples from the research include:

Hawaii
Finnair Plus can offer particularly attractive Alaska Airlines awards, including long U.S. itineraries.

Europe
Iberia can be especially attractive for business-class flights between the U.S. and Spain.

Qatar Airways
Avios can unlock Qatar's famous Qsuite business class, with some U.S.–Doha awards available from around 70,000 Avios one-way.

The takeaway: The value isn't necessarily in Avios.

It's in knowing which Avios program to use.

Avios Got More Expensive — But Not Everywhere

The number of points isn't the whole story anymore

British Airways increased the cash component of Reward Flights beginning May 27, 2026, while keeping the Avios requirement unchanged.

That's important because an award isn't really:

“70,000 Avios = free flight.”

It's:

70,000 Avios + taxes + fees + carrier charges

And those cash costs can dramatically change whether an award is actually a good deal.

British Airways currently advertises Reward Flights from Europe starting at 10,000 Avios + £2.50 each way, while longer-distance awards can start from 55,000 Avios + £150 return.

Boarding Soon rule: Never judge an Avios redemption by the points price alone.

Look at points + cash.

Here's How to Know If Your Avios Redemption Is Good

Stop asking what an Avios is worth

There's no universal value.

Use this simple formula:

(Cash price − taxes/fees) ÷ Avios used = value per Avios

Example:

A business-class ticket costs $4,000.

The award costs 70,000 Avios + $200.

($4,000 − $200) ÷ 70,000 = 5.4¢ per Avios

That's potentially excellent.

But if the same flight costs $500 cash and requires 40,000 Avios + $100:

($500 − $100) ÷ 40,000 = 1¢ per Avios

Suddenly, paying cash might make much more sense.

The simple rule:

Cheap cash fare? → Pay cash.

Expensive business-class fare? → Check Avios.

High Avios + high fees? → Keep shopping.

The Avios Strategy Most Beginners Miss

Don't transfer points until you find the seat

This should be the final big lesson.

You can have:

100,000 Amex points

→ transfer to British Airways

→ move them to Iberia

→ book a business-class flight

But there's no reason to make those moves until you know exactly what you're booking.

The smarter sequence is:

1. Find the flight

2. Check award availability

3. Compare Avios programs

4. Calculate the cash + points cost

5. Find the best transfer bonus

6. Transfer

7. Book

That's the Avios game.

THE BOARDING SOON CHEAT SHEET

Avios

One currency, multiple airline programs.

Best trick

Move Avios to the program offering the best redemption.

Big current opportunity

30% Amex → Avios transfer bonus through Sept. 27, 2026.

Big warning

Some Avios accounts now need to be 30 days old before transfers.

Best use

Often premium-cabin flights and strategically priced partner awards.

Don't forget

Taxes and fees can destroy an otherwise great redemption.

Golden rule: Find the flight first. Transfer points second.

The Takeaway

Avios isn't complicated once you stop treating it like a single airline program.

It's a network.

And that network is the opportunity.

The same 50,000 Avios can produce a mediocre economy redemption—or become the key to a much more valuable business-class trip.

The trick isn't earning more points.

It's knowing where to put them.
