The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas is urging American travelers to avoid renting jet skis after a series of serious safety incidents involving local operators.

According to the embassy, at least six U.S. citizens have been hospitalized following jet ski accidents since August 2024. The alert also notes multiple reported sexual assaults involving jet ski operators, including incidents reported in both 2025 and 2026.

Because of these ongoing concerns, U.S. government employees stationed in the Bahamas are prohibited from renting or operating jet skis on New Providence and Paradise Island.

The embassy warned that some operators on popular beaches—including Junkanoo Beach, Saunders Beach, and Cabbage Beach—may be unlicensed, uninsured, or operating unsafe equipment. Officials also said enforcement of existing regulations remains inconsistent.

Travelers visiting the Bahamas are encouraged to use reputable tour providers, verify that any water sports operator is properly licensed and insured, and avoid accepting offers from vendors operating directly on the beach.

The U.S. Department of State currently advises travelers to exercise increased caution when visiting the Bahamas due to crime. Officials also recommend avoiding swimming or snorkeling alone and following local safety guidance during water activities.

The Takeaway: If you're planning a trip to the Bahamas, think twice before renting a jet ski from a beach vendor. Choosing licensed operators and following official travel advisories can help reduce your risk and make for a safer vacation.
